Thanks Adrian. It would give me peace of mind to have a spare. I am guessing it is something I could sell at some point if needed and the auxiliary parts also.

Engine complete with primary cases, alternator, starter motor & amal carburettor has been delivered for £500. I will now build a crate for engine and drop some oil inside. I was planning to do the decompressor mod on the spare head. The bloke I got the engine off has advised against doing so because of compression leakage.

I'm not sure if you mean tried the engine or the modification. I realise that I have a 14mm tap. I might practise on an old engine and see if I am able to carry out the job myself. I need to buy a decompressor cable which I assume I can buy online or from Solihull.

Keeping the drill and the tap straight is the main thing. I'm sure our hosts have a whole shelf full of decomp cables, either barrel or rounded nipple at the handlebar end depending on what sort of lever you're using.

Doing it in a drill press is the most practical idea, clamp the head to the table, tilt it to the angle you need, drill it and put the tap in the chuck and rotate the chuck by hand to get the tap started, should be able to get it square enough that way

I must be the odd one out here, my X has done 28,600 miles since it was registered in 2005 and apart from the obligatory Sprag Clutch failure and a replacement AGM battery I just fitted its running like a dream. I must just be a lucky one, oh and have gotta do the fork seals (nearly forgot that one).
