It has a old alternator ( off a 1969 Constellation ) I want to wire it up to give 12 v the only problem is the wires are Red ,Green, and Black I’m hoping someone will know how to tell which two wires need to be connected together?
Also which wires to swop over on the Ignition switch and light switch as I am building a new wiring harness
Thanks

If you're getting your 12v reg-rect from Paul Goff, he'll be able to advise you on which wires go where.

Those alternator wire colours are odd, they aren't Lucas or Wipac I think. Does this sound like an older Indian colour code? It would be worth finding out because the outputs may be different. If you aren't on a very tight budget I'd just buy a new alternator, a good opportunity to start with all new components?

It looks like your wiring has been replaced at some time and whoever did it used wire he had available at the time, I myself have done this , using wire that was more suitable for the environment it would be living in but have amended my wiring diagram as well. You will need a wiring diagram showing original colours and an ohm meter to work out which new colour replaces the original. I did write an article many years back in the gun magazine but cannot for the life of me remember which one. Will have to search for it to remind myself how I actually did it.
Regarding the lighting switch, that will or should be straight forward because use of a modern control box eliminates its function of controlling the alternator output, you also lose the infamous rectifier. Ignition switch is also simpler unless you have or want the emergency start facility but if you bite the bullet and also go for electronic ignition that can be easily done. If you want I can let you know my email address and we can converse that way which will allow more detailed information and also possibly some diagrams or photos to be shared

Hi thanks for your reply(s)
I changed around my search on the massage board and found a reply for alternator wiring. By a Les H posted on the 15th July 2012 covering exactly what I was after. Is that the article you wrote?
It would be great if you could let me know your email address this is my first compleat rebuild of a Royal Enfield I have rebuilt Triumph and BSA’s before but Royal Enfield are totally different!

Afraid not my article, mine was in the gun magazine quite a few years ago. I have been in a love hate relationship with constellations for many years and over that time I must have made most of the mistakes that can be made. My bikes can in no way be described as pretty unless that word proceeds the word rough but I quite happily load them up and head off with a song in my heart and panniers full of spanners. If you would like to contact me, feel free, my mail address is [email protected]. Hope to hear from you
