The "rats nest" may not be so difficult.

Just find the wire that goes to the neutral indicator light at the bottom of the speedo.

Papasmurf, it is dead easy to test the switch, disconect the wire on the box,(don't loose the screw) set the multimeter to ohms and test center of switch to the box, operate clutch see what happens, shift gears see what happens. This will tell you if the switch is working or not, if it is working then the problem is somewhere in the wiring

Norm there is no screw to lose, On my Electra X the switch screws into the back of the gear box, to disconnect the switch and wire involves taking the battery carrier off, (which is pain to do.
I really do need to know how to remove the switch from the back of the gearbox, without splitting the bike in half.

Ok all the Elecrtras and E/S Bullets I pulled motors out of all were screwed into the switch which was a bitch to get at but it had to be disconnected before I could remove the motors. Maybe they made different ones for Aus?, Anyway you still should be able to test the switch with the multimeter with the wire still connected, you are only testing for continuity with the switch open or closed. Don't turn the ignition on, you are not testing voltage at this stage

Yes Eric, remove the primary and you can get at the switch, and removing the primary is a very simple job on the Cast Irons, bit slower on the Electra because of all the screws but still a very simple job.

Nothing hard about that job dead simple, and if you own an Electra it is something you need to get used to, life aint simple if you ride an Electra

Actually it probably isn't as simple as I made it out to be, simple if you have all the tools, not so simple if you don't. The biggest issue is if the 3 screws holding the inner primary have not been removed since it left the factory, they can be a real problem. I had to make up a hex key fitting I could use it in my impact driver, otherwise you run the risk of rounding the hex out
