A postscript. It’s been suggested to me that smells, mess etc can be avoided by putting the crankcase half in one of those large oven roasting bags they use for turkeys. Sounded like a wind-up to me but has anybody actually tried that?

Regardless of the effectiveness of a roasting bag ( I never cook turkey, long story, don't want to talk about it,) the rest of the replacing bearings/tappets/whatever process is hot and mechanically tricky, you'll need a stout wooden board, welding gloves at least, a hammer, drifts, grease etc etc. Sound like a kitchen job???? Not to me....

PS, the other half just reminded me (as if I could forget) under what circumstances we agreed that the old cooker would go down to the garage and I wouldn't want to repeat it...
