OK Felix, that sounds good. I'm trying to do this on my old KPH speedo.

How do you get the bezel off? I have managed to turn it but it doesn't seem to be unscrewing!

As long as you're handy and willing to risk breaking tiny things:

Remove the speedo. Working around the lower edge with a spudger or rounded gentle tool will open the crimped ring just enough to remove the thin glass. I used a smooth, worn screwdriver. The glass is very fragile and not easy to replace. Bend the needle up to ease it over the stop peg and watch where it comes to rest. I used a thin hemostat to pry the needle off using the two face-mounting screws as fulcrums topped by thin leather pads. A hot soldering iron helped release the needle from the shaft. Replace the needle where it should be, the angle you intend to subtract from the old 60 mph position. Replace the needle and ease it over the stop peg and bend it downward to engage the peg. Install the speedo and test it. If you need to fine-tune the position, the needle can be removed and replaced roadside while holding the shaft still with a hemostat. When done, remove the speedo and crimp the glass and bezel.

Alternatively, the needle can be removed while in some way holding the shaft still and repositioning the needle.
Words are failing me, but I hope you can make sense of the concept.

Chronometric speedometers have screw-on bezels, magnetic instruments have the "permanently" fixed version.

Please only do this if you assume the risks and are handy with delicate stuff. I was prepared to buy a new one anyway, so I took the plunge. I've worked on various cheap clocks with mixed results. Two sticky bits: The bezel should be "massaged" by sweeping the tool around the speedo body so you don't split the rim. Be patient and it'll come off intact. The needle is very tight, so be very careful easing it off. Heat seems to help as the needle is metallic. Afterward it will remove more easily for re-adjustment.

Half Felixed. I have got the bezel off - glass intact. Reminded me of getting the tyres off my BMW which had been on for over twenty years.

It's my old kph speedo which apart from being out by about the same amount as yours, was also very unstable with the needle swinging about.

My new one is in mph, still inaccurate (by the same amount) but is quite stable.

Any ideas on increasing the damping? Maybe a bit of lithium grease in the needle bush?


With both of mine, plus yours, out by the same amount I am wondering if they are calibrated to a different standard.

OR we know speedos are always calibrated high by 5-7% - I wonder if the 5-7% has been applied twice? That would give us the errors we see.

If we all left the speedo reading fast, and stuck to that, nobody should get a speeding fine.

Needle bounce is sometimes from a chattering cable but I'm unsure of a cure for the clock unless you delve into living the pivots of the clock innards. Here is a link that may help.

Sewing machine or clock oil are good for this. Be careful not to get it on the delicate dial face.
