Just a little PS.

Doesn't the fact that there is no agreement on this question among the manufactures and experts suggest that there can be no real advantage/disadvantage either way. If there was a clear advantage we'd all know and the correct orientation would be common knowledge.

As previously stated the instructions that came in the box with the Progressive Springs (TM) in stated the close coils to the bottom. I do not go against the manufacturers instructions.

Good point papasmurf - only that if you'd bought from another manufacturer their advise would be the opposite.

Presto Progressive Springs is a trade mark manufacturer, the instructions come from them, not from where the springs are purchased.

Understood papasmurf - just wanted to mention that different advice is given by different manufacturers - there's no universal agreement on this question. Which I guess means it's a bit of a waste of time discussing it, because there is no 'right' way - a real case of 'your truth' is as valid (or as invalid) as 'my truth' [!!!!!!!!!!!].

Adrian, my response wasn’t an example of post modernism. It is classic Aristotelian logic, the law of the excluded middle: where both answers are right one can’t be wrong unless both are also wrong. Ask Jacques Derrida.

I'd have a job, he has been dead for over 14 years...

To save anyone from having to look (or dig) him up:

"Jacques Derrida (/ˈdɛrɪdə/; French: [ʒak dɛʁida]; born Jackie Élie Derrida;[2] July 15, 1930 – October 9, 2004) was an Algerian-born French philosopher best known for developing a form of semiotic analysis known as deconstruction, which he discussed in numerous texts, and developed in the context of phenomenology. He is one of the major figures associated with post-structuralism and postmodern philosophy."
