Now running fine, updating just to finish off thread. Removed and rebuilt carb and found I’d installed one of the jets upside down. However the it still suffered same problems. Decided to replace carb with Mikune, new spark plug and re check the points and timing. All running well with new carb fitted, until when hot developed a misfire, diagnosed as faulty condenser. What a pain this has been trying to chase. Wasted lots of monies rebuilding old carb with new parts and the faulty condenser was sparking new too. Frustrating and glad to see the end of it . . . Until next time.

Difficult problem to solve. I end up repairing or replacing one bit at a time until it works. So far it's proved to be the coil (after replacing points, condenser and carburettor) and the carburettor (after replacing coils). The symptoms in both cases were exactly the same (to me anyway). Third time I got it right first time with a new spark plug, after I remembered the existing one had done about 20,000 miles.
