Reading that a misfire can cause damage to the engine is a bit of a concern I'm guessing that replacing the engine would be quite expensive. I have also read that the Enfield classic is a more reliable option, is this the case and how does it compare to the Elextra X? I see a few for sale but at much higher prices.

Adrian, using the words Electra X and investment in the same sentence is making my sides split with laughter, but I guess the Ford Edsel is now loved by its current owners

Norm I am now so paranoid about the engine exploding, I am too scared to ride it without having someone else with me as an escort to go and get help in case I need it.

They do NOT explode, papasmurf, that's what a traditional 500 Bullet engine can do when the con-rod snaps, which actually results in a far more expensive repair bill. Have a fully-charged mobile phone with you to call the recovery people if you break down, and you probably won't.

Otherwise, given your admitted level of mistrust in your Electra-X(ish), would it be unkind to suggest that you either save up for and fit one of our hosts' 200160K crankshafts, or sell the bike and move on?

Adrian if the engine kicks back it can do considerable damage. I do not have the money to carry out repairs that would cost more than the bike is worth.

With an Electra big end failure you need at the very least a new crankpin and needle roller assembly. If you can find someone to machine out the big end eye of the con rod to take a separate hardened outer track for the bearing, the rod can be re-used. Alpha bearings used to do this in the UK, but I'm not sure that this service is still available. Otherwise keep the old rod as a paperweight and use a new EFI con-rod, crankpin and needle roller assembly to rebuild the crankshaft. Our hosts' 200160K crank will make a splendid replacement, But It Is Not Cheap.

If you're having to do a bottom end rebuild you'll most likely need new (European or Japanese) main bearings, and you will also have to check the cylinder bore, piston and oil pump chambers for damage caused by little pieces of crankpin getting into the oil and causing mayhem - the gauze strainers only stop the bigger lumps, unless you've fitted some sort of sump magnet.

Hi folks,
I have had my ElectraX now for about 3 years, a 2007 bike with around 12000 on the clock, and no major problems. My bike was one of watsonian Squires special editions, called the sportsman XS as seen in Gordon May`s book , `Made in India`.

As far as the sprag clutch problem , surely this is a thing of the past as our hosts can supply the answer. My bike has their improved tci unit. I cannot comment on the crank problems other than to say that `touch wood` I`ve had no problems, and neither have the two other guys in my local club with X`s. I do not do high mileage any more but both these other two fellers do. At the back end of last summer I bought a B5 bullet efi and the plan was to sell the X as the garage was a bit crowded. However it is still in the garage as so far I have not felt like letting it go, its a nice bike. Not very scientific I know but to me my bikes are more than just machines .

cheers.
