I held out and resisted buying via photographs. Where is Papasmurf and what is the cost of the bike?

Yep I have read all the horror stories too, but I have a Electra X high mileage now no trouble except for the carb going mad, I also have an Electra X engine in a replica WW2 sidecar outfit that has not done as many miles but runs fine. The only real problem I have had on both is the high consumption of spark plugs, covered elsewhere on the forum. I always stop the engines on the decompressor.

So human nature to concentrate on the negatives so lets see some positive stories?

Just been out to the garage threatened Electra X (is) with violence, and it reluctantly started. (The odd thing is the tickover now raised from 725RPM to 900rpm and I noticed the starter cranked the engine over at 425rpm.

I tuned an Electra X at 17,000 miles, which has now done over another 10,000 miles according to the owner. It is ridden quite hard and will go well over 90 mph and is frequently ridden long distances at speed. So far, so good. I also stripped an engine showing fewer miles than the former for tuning [sorry, have no record of the numbers on the clock] and there was a lot of play in the big end, so, perhaps it is pot luck, but one thing that will help kill a big end, especially roller types as found in these machines, is to plod or thump around at low speeds in high gears, on large throttle openings and I suspect many R.E. machines are subjected to such treatment. I have also seen a fairly low mileage UCE crank with a knackered big end, so let's not assume we are 'out of the woods' where big ends are concerned. Change the [correct grade and type] oil frequently, use the gears and let them rev a bit with lighter loads and they may just make it!

Papasmurf, what price would your bike go for? Thanks for all of the information, my faith has been restored in the Electra - X model. Do people think £1850 is high for a 2006 low mileage bike? Any tips on what I should be looking for when viewing? Re prices going down with new machines - surely most bikes will be going into dealers as trade ins? Dealer prices seem to be around £3000 for similar spec bikes.

Cov Lad if I ever get the major problems others have had, I won't be able to repair to repair it due to the cost being more than getting another bike, (not an Enfield.) it will got free to anyone who will take it away.
