Hello All

My alternator is of Indian origin and has three wires coloured green red and black. I’ve not seen this colour combination before... can anyone tell me which two to join into the loom in order to get 12v please?

Thanks

What light switch do you have? What year is the bikes? Do you have emergency start provision?

You are going to have to closely study the stator winding connections!

ONE stator output wire will be directly connected to ALL THREE stator coils, this wire goes to one side of the rectifier (either connection)

ONE stator output wire will be directly connected to only the ONE stator wire.

This goes to the other rectifier connection.

Confusion reigns? It seems I accidentally deleted part of a paragraph in my initial reply...?

The last (third) stator output wire will be directly connected to TWO stator coils.
This wire determines alternator Output:

If it is connected to the first wire (3 stator coil connections) you will have low output enoght to trickle charge the battery.
IF it is NOT connected anywhere, you will have medium charging rate...
IF connected to the other stator wire (the single stator connection) you will have max output at all times.

Clear as mud?

Thanks Tim...

...I think!

I’ll have a good look later (it’s sub-zero on my garage at the moment!)

The bike is mid 50s but has had an ‘interesting’ life with many modern additions... hence starting again with a simple 12v DC wiring system!

Hi Stephen, If you want 12 volt DC the easiest way is to use a Boyer Powerbox or similar - just connect your [three] alternator wirea as one pair and one single wire into the yellow wires going into the box and 12 volts DC will be available from the black and red wires coming out from the box. As for which wires do what from the alternator, you can swap the alternator wires and their paired combinations around with the engine running, to get the best output - no harm will be done and I have just done this exact thing with a MK1 Interceptor I have just converted to 12 volts, due to somebody soldering random coloured wires onto an otherwise good alternator stator. Regards, Paul.

Thanks Paul, I am using a Chinese copy Powerbox so that sounds an even easier solution!
