I always heard that REs are reputed to "run cold" and that would indicate a warm/hot plug would be used to keep itself clean.

From experience on tuning quite a range of other vehicles, an "8 grade" NGK is quite a cold running plug and would normally only be needed in a high performance engine. For example a couple of car engines I've tuned up (one with a 13 to 1 CR and the other with a 9.5 to 1 CR but supercharged) needed only to go from a 5 or 6 grade to a 7.

Is there an issue with the use of a slightly warmer grade of plug?

Correct grade will also depend on riding style to some extent, but if you've shelled out for a full ASBO conversion with a beefed-up bottom end to cope with it, you're probably not intending to pootle around, are you? A hotter plug might be OK if you're taking it easier, but I don't think I'd want to go hotter than a B7ES.

I agree that unless the safe of tune is very radical, an NGK7 would probably be a good starting point. Then, if it pinks, an 8 grade. If it fluffs up, try a 6.
