Hi,I fitted a pair of Oxford heated grips to my Electra x a few weeks back and all seems fine,they work as should,bike is starting and behaving as normal however I've noticed the ammeter needle is constantly pulsing in the plus range whilst riding but remains steady with headlight on.Thought it maybe thermostat switching for heat but does it when grips cold on start up,not sure if a problem or not,any ideas please.

Some speed/temperature controllers work by switching on and off rapidly in sucession using a timing chip which are cheap and reliable and only use power for actual heating. Increase in speed/temperature is achieved by increasing the ratio of on to off. The alternatives are using a resistor which wastes power and is less relaible or an electronic voltage reguator with is more expensive and bulky.



Oxford grips are capable of getting stupidly hot. Hot enough to burn you and melt the epoxy resin they're glued on with (I know this because the procedure for removing them is to wire then direct to the battery without the controller and wait for the glue to melt). This is so they heat up quickly when switched on. It would be logical to use that type of on/off heat controller in this situation. Still does no harm to ask them though.

Hi Alan R and stinkwheel,I contacted Oxford Products customer care as you suggested and got a swift reply to say it is normal,as any setting other than 100% is using pulsed power from the controller,ammeter is steady at this setting and it's been on this most of time recently as temps only just above freezing,roll on spring.
