As can be seen in the photo above, there are variations in wire thickness between the different clips available. The clip on the left came with the second-hand piston from our hosts and is much heavier than the other two. The middle one is the survivor from the original piston and the wear/damage inflicted by the gudgeon pin is clearly visible. It appears that the "ears" were the only part of the clip retaining the pin. The third clip is a new one selected from the online parts book, and therefore the correct one ? I shall carefully check that the new one does not sit so deep in the groove as to negate its purpose in restraining the gudgeon pin. Remember that the previous clip was still in its groove, minus the "ears" when the pin passed through it and caused the damage to the bore.
I considered the 535cc option but cost was a consideration. Keeping in mind that the structure of the piston did not fail, only the clips were at fault. I am now agonising over the wear evident on the oil pump spindle !!!
MERRY CHRISTMAS. Dave.
