Hi,
The 4 speed gearbox works well, except when warm, it pops back(out)when shifting from 3rd to second.. It holds for a moment then pops back into a false neutral between 2nd and 3rd.
I tried giving the detent plunjer another twist in and rotating the shifter plate clockwise.
It does not help.
Has anyone a clue what could be the problem?

Hi mine does that but it helps to keep your foot pressed on the lever while you release the clutch and keep the pressure on for a second or so afterwards then when it tries to pop back out your foot will keep it in. :)

Apparantly its normal on the old Albion gearboxes but takes some getting used to! :)

Detent plunger won't help as it does not control selection, just the stiffness of lever shift. Put the detent back where it was and experiment with the selector ratchet back plate on it's slots, you want to aim for an even distance between the ratchet teeth and the pawls. Will take a couple of goes usually!

I had exactly the same problem with mine- solved it by selling the bike and buying a Yamaha!! - (sorry, not very helpful advice) do what Mark M says. I found it takes very small adjustments on the selector plate to get it right. adding a gearbox cover stiffener and modifying the clutch push rod also helps with gear selection. cut the push rod in two and add a ball bearing in the centre. you will need to heat treat the cut ends. this mod stops the rod from flexing. also make sure the clutch plates are good. I think a lot of gear selecting issues are from a dragging clutch, which is why its worse when hot.
