Hi ET, to dismantle the rear shocks you will need a tool like this: http://accessories.hitchcocksmotorcycle ... Tools/3354 from our Hosts tool section, it is part number 2039 in the General Tools Section. I made my own as I had a suitable round section lying about and the rest was easy enough to fabricate. The Woodhead(which you have,) and later Armstrong shocks are pretty well made and protected from the weather so once you get them apart as long as the damper rod seal is still intact and there is no rust on the rod itself there is a good chance the damping will still be effective. Pump the rod in and out of the damper body a few times and eventually you should get resistance as you pull it. If so it's probably ok. Any oil leaks and it's shot and not really practical to repair. By the look of yours in the pics they are in a bad state and in any case you usually want a longer softer sprung shock than for a road bike so I'd save the bother and buy a new set.

It's not a bolt, it's a stud attached to the swinging arm with a nut on the outside which has already disappeared on yours. The lower shock mount will just pull off sideways although it may be rusted onto the centre sleeve of the lower rubber bush. It is clearly illustrated in the Parts Book. If you haven't got a Parts Book get one, the illustrations are not perfect but often help in these situations.
