What ever the theory about whether a 4.00 x 18 trials tyre fits, having just removed my 'standard' swing arm I can see the paint has been rubbed off on both arms. I also discovered that the chain guard is a bit mangled, not caused by the wide tyre I am sure but something else must have caused it - another think to check out.

If the tyre does conflict with the rear chain guard you can always trim part of the inside face off, just leave the top and the outside in place. A.

I know your original question was relating to the fitment of a wider swinging arm but can you not continue to use what you have with the thinner 4.10 tyre or is there a specific reason to use the wider 4.00 tyre which does require a wider swinging arm?

Ric the only reason for the wider tyre is a frivolous desire for the look of a trials bike. The wider swing arm arrived today and fitted, now I need a half link for the new chain. Adrian I have had to trim the chain guard using a pair of tin snips I bought off a gent in the car boot field at Beaulieu.

Sounds good :) With the increased 'gearing' from the larger tyre, a smaller front sprocket if available might permit an even number link the rear chain, so no half-link.
I went up one on the front on my B5 and 102 links instead of 101 has opened a Pandoras box of options with almost as many digits following the 530 designation as you'd find on a typical harley!

Further to this minor saga just ordered a half link. 'Whole' links make tyre jam against chain guard mounting or one more dosen't leave a lot of adjustment to account for chain stretch! "Such fun", as some annoying character on TV says.
