The item without a name is actually called a tappet. I know this because I just bought one to fit to my Bighead Bullet engine! ET's cleaning problem is probably worse than usual because the Clipper crankcases were left unpolished unlike the Bullet ones. It was part of the low budget specification of the Clipper although the crankcases are otherwise identical to the 350 Bullet.

You can also try scrubbing the cases with isopropyl alcohol and steel wool, they shift all sorts of muck. Works on the burnt-on stuff on my oven's glass door, so it should cope with a bit of crankcase crud.

Any external corrosion on the alloy can be cleaned up with a rotary wire brush on the end of an electric drill.

Those tappet (or cam follower) stems look badly pitted by corrosion, I would not be tempted to re-use them but replace them with new.

A can of brake or carb cleaner can work well too.

Kerosene's another great solvent. Firefighters used to use the stuff "back in the day" to remove tar and other gunk from their engines.

The Parts Book is your friend for stuff like this, your engine (1959?) will be mechanically almost identical to the 350 Bullet engine.

While you might get Indian Bullet parts to fit (and a lot of parts ARE interchangeable), why bother as our hosts have Redditch parts in stock? Tappets (or cam followers) are part no. 22613, for which our hosts want £11.40 each including VAT, the guides in which they run up and down are part no. 32302, same price. See the partd book page, items 10 and 12.

To get the old tappets out it is necessary to remove the bronze guides, you have to heat the crankcase half up to about 150°c (oven or really good blowtorch), and remove the guides with an extractor that screws onto the threaded bit at the top, which our hosts may also have.

Looking at your pictures again, I see that the cam spindles are rust-knackered too, you might therefore want to check the state of the idler pinion spindles as well. More items for your shopping list.
