You could try a dose of Redex or Morey`s upper cylinder lubricant. I used Morey`s in the 2000 Bullet from new,it never had a seizure, or maybe I was lucky?

You have mentioned that the valve timing is correct, but what about ignition timing?

An engine with grossly retarded ignition timing can start very easily, but will not run well.

Hello and good morning Andrew, having read all the way through this interesting conversation a couple of thoughts come to mind
You say " And yes it had been the same symptom since new" if so why was the problem not resolved under warranty? and how have you managed 6000 miles if it is so unrideable?
The symptoms you describe indicate over retarded ignition timing something you seem not to have checked
I'm sure some patient person here will guide you through setting/checking ignition timing.
Good luck in your search for inner peace and an end to your angst :)

Jammed advance/retard mechanism?

My unmodified (I think) 2004 sixty-5 always needs the choke to start from cold.

Hi all, Many thanks for all the replies. I am going to advance the ignition timing by turning the plate anti clockwise a little, I have marked where it was originally. i have freed up the carb slide, i think a combination of a little too much with the spanner and a trapped cable!! I do have a good oil supply to the rockers and the push rods spin nicely. The plug was black, a little wet, so if anything my mixture is a little rich, so that should remove that possible extra heat source. Will fettle a little more! Thanks for all the advice, much appreciated. And my new gloves have just arrived!! So need to get it all working. The engine was, or should have been changed under warranty in the first place, and all seemed well. Worked abroad for a while, then out of warranty - and then the problems started again. I has been serviced, so would have expected the ignition timing to have been set. I have not fiddled with it at all, so could be the culprit! I hope so. I had one of those special TDC tools, alas now in the place where all the tools go that you actually need.

"An engine with grossly retarded ignition timing can start very easily"

it the invers, when to much retarded its a bugger to start cold.

ones running it will run bad both ways.

the boyerbransden is indeed a bit fiddly to set up correctly, an is often set up to much retarded.

Just been out to fettle, in the absence of the proper kit, or knowhow, i have retarded the ignition timing by moving the plate clockwise. I marked the point where it was at and moved it around by approx 2-3mm. bike starts and ticks over nicely. No choke to start mind you. all back together now ready for a ride out. I cant do any more damage , can i? I await comments before I ride off. Its a standard points set up. Gap ok.

As it has a points system it is quite easy to set up properly by the book instead of farking about blind

Moving the points backplate 2-3mm at the adjuster slots will equate to roughly 10 degrees or more at the crank - however many degrees you move the backplate, double it for crank degrees. If the ignition was over retarded and it is now 10 degrees or so more retarded, damage could indeed occur, just as it would if it were that far over advanced, although it would probably kick back like a mule in that state.
