Hi i have an issue with a Crusader swing arm spindle. when I tighten the spindle the swing arm locks up. the metal sleeves in the swing arm bearings lock against the swing arm plates on the frame. it seems the rubber bushes wont turn/flex - any thoughts please? thanks

As I understand the movement is provided by the rubber (bonded between the steel inner and outer bushes) in torsion, which is why the inner sleeves should protrude beyond the outer. If the inner and outer sleeves BOTH lock up against the swinging arm plates you'll get no movement.

thanks Adrian - only the inner sleeves protrude and lock against the frame plates which, I assume, is how it should be. so does this mean that the rubber bushes have gone hard?

If there's no movement at all, I'd say you probably need new ones, how old are they? A.

dont know how old- I bought the swing arm some time ago- forgot to say its a crusader sports part if that makes any difference - difficult to do? thanks

There should be a thrust washer (46265) each side between the frame plate and the swing arm. You didn't mention it so I'm checking to see you have them. If not the frame could be clamping the swing arm solid.

thanks Mark - do you mean the round 'inserts' that fit into swingarm plates? the inner metal bearing sleeve is tight against these inserts

from the parts book it looks like its a Continental GT s/arm- not Crusader Sports ( oops! )

Yes Mart, and that may be your problem, the earlier swing arm (bronze bush type) is wider than the the later Metalastik (rubber) bush type so you might be clamping the assembly completely solid. if the rubber bushes pose a problem I would prefer to change the design to the Classic type. I can turn up some bronze bushes and hopefully utilise the Classic spacer (part 3) subj to dims etc
