Hi all, I don't recall stamping on the gear changer on my "new" euro 4 but it seems that the selector bit is broken so the gear changer just hangs there like a case of brewers' droop! Youtube show this as common fault and I was wondering, is it a guarantee job or will i have to get the parts? (it looks like the complete assembly has to be changed for the failure of one side of the activation arm)
So - is it a common fault? and is it worth trying for a guarantee claim?

Just behind the starter motor, inboard of the primary case is a sort of bolt head. this is the pivot bolt for the selector camplate's index spring mechanism. The mechanism can jam, causing the symptoms you describe. rather than strip the lot, you can just put a spanner on this bolt and slacken it about half a turn, when you might hear a click inside the engine, if so just nip it up again and normal service may well be resumed.

My friend Myles runs a 1970's BSA WD B40 and his detent spring broke recently--- so nothing new there, alas !!

Revband is correct, of course, but that might be where you get the sucking through teeth and phrases like 'it's going to be a big job, might take some time' etc, where, for the sake of 10 seconds with a spanner, you MIGHT just fix it yourself and save all sorts of hassle. Owner's choice, I guess.

Against that, if owners don’t refer issues under warranty (not guarantee) RE won’t get a full picture of failings. Who knows how frequently this happens? It should be RE. That said, in a race between a glacier and RE to rectify common faults I’d back the former....

They have been pretty quick with mine. TPS done inside a week. I declined to let them do anything with the snapped chain, I didn't want another Indian made one. If you want to fix it yourself, drop them a snotty tweet saying how **** the product is. You'll get a reply offering help if you send a Personal Messsage (so they've logged it). The reply to the PM will be a phone number that doesn't work, but that's RE for you!
