Well somehow I fixed it. I thought the reg and rec looked a bit tired so to prevent inevitable future issues I decided to replace them from our hosts. Fired the bike up and we are all good with a healthy swing back to the green on the ammeter. Not quite sure where i went wrong with my attempt at diagnosis but hopefully I am all good for a while. Thanks to everyone who offered advice. I have learnt a bit but in some areas i am still clueless. As the bike is 11 years old and has a pretty hard life I am thinking I may invest in a new alternator at some point, alongside the points that are still the originals.
