Come on guys, call a truce, you are both right in different ways as you are both talking different systems, I also spent my entire working life in electronics, Jamesy, look at the circuit diagram, what Aetheric says about it is absolutely correct, who really needs to learn to read a circuit diagram and understand a basic AC DC power supply?.

Well even if you disagree I expect you are able to fix your bikes. Alternatively you can come round my house and have a competition to fix my non charging bullet. My life in graphics seems to have left me ill equipped to sort out these electrical gremlins.

First of all you need to understand the theory of AC to DC power supply.lol. only joking.look along the power source ie alternator-rectifier-regulator-battery.If your battery is older consider replacing it.

Ok it appears that you are still in the past, what you say was correct for older British bikes, however times have changed, electronics have progressed.

Early bikes had a relatively low output alternator, and a bridge rectifier and zenner diode did the job, now we have a better system the alternator output can be higher as the AC voltage is regulated first, this takes the zenner short circuit load off the rectifier, the thyristors are also capable of withstanding a higher current than the old zenner ever could.It is now alternator, regulator, rectifier.
