I have an oil leak on the transmission mainshaft (sprocket shaft) on my Enfield. If I remove the primary assembly and then remove the sprocket... will I be able to pull the old seal and replace it (without pulling the tranny out?

Hi think setup has a spacer over shaft that drive sprocket bears against if its the normal enfield 4 spd hosts parts book will confirm this , you should be able to remove spacer this runs on the seal lip, you should be able to pull seal out with a hook tool or carefully with a small screwdriver. To install new one you need a driver that bears on outside of seal even a bit of plastic pipe cut square will do or a socket with 3/4inch drive seal has to go in dead square and just tap into pla e, lube the seal lip with a little grease before replaceing spacer if it shows no sign of wear. Best of luck.

Thanks Scotty... When I put the back primary cover back on... do I use any sealer for the open type crank bearing that has the larger washer over it? Seal the back of the case? There's no gasket.

Hi Croni, not familiar with inter motors bullet has a seal outboard of mainshaft bearing drive side, on bullets there is a paper gasket over t he round bearing part of the crankcase I put non hardening gasket cement on both faces if you have no seal crankcase pressure would vent into chaincase messy. Have a look at hitchcocks online parts book for your model or try to find a inter owner.

Hi, bit different on S2. The seal presses into the inner primary cover. Care needs to be taken to press seal in square and back of seal flush with back of inner cover. No gasket between inner cover and crankcase although I think some people do A’s belt and braces. If you do don’t use a silicon sealant. All detailed in workshop manual. If you don’t have one suggest you buy parts book and workshop manual, parts book gives good indication of assembly sequence of parts and manual tells you how to assemble them. Richard
