Hi Paul

Yes mate it's really come together since I went back to the std cams..

I think I was fighting a losing battle as it was.

At least once I've run her in and made any tweaks and adjustments I can reinstall the performance cams in the confident knowledge that everything else is spot on.

I'm going to retry your originally suggested jetting again 106/220 with needle on top notch etc as a starting point and see how that goes.

Well got out for a decent ride today. Bowling along at 80 feathering the throttle, bike running like a dream then cough cough splutter die..... Managed too restart and limp upto the Holyville cafe on half throttle... After a quick brekky investigated carb and found that the needle jet had unwound itself... Sorted that and bike hasn't missed a beat... Just got to sort out a bit of clutch drag... Plug colour spot on.. Running 106 needle jet with needle on top notch as per Mr Henshaws original suggestion..

Now to notch up a few miles before the cams go back in...

I've just been looking at fitting my high performance cams (Hitchcocks PART No. 90023) to my '93 500 bullet and they seem to mesh together very tightly which doesn't feel right to me, (with my limited experience). How were yours?
Also, did you take any pictures of your grinding of the crankcases?

Hi Tomshayes. I note you got ASBO26 up to ~80 (mph?) on standard cams and pinion, presumably pinion on dot and inlet cam 1-tooth retarded. Then you replaced the cams with the performance ones. Did you reach any valve bounce with either? Did the performance cams do as well as the OEM ones?

The reason I ask is that my 1996 535cc with both std and performance cams (inlet retarded, steel conrod, E13 bearing, 32mm Amal Mk2) easily makes 75 mph (GPS) at ~4500rpm with a 21T sprocket at just over half-throttle but valve bounce is starting with both cam sets. I must admit I’m scared to take it further because I’m not sure my 70-year old hands/brain (or the indian frame) are up to going faster.

Cheers, ChrisD

Hi Chris, something is very wrong if you are getting valve bounce at what must be rather low engine speeds and with standard cams. Perhaps the valve springs are weak, or their fitted length is too long, possibly caused by excessive cutting of the valve seats for instance? Valve bounce with the competition valves, springs and cams shouldn't be an issue at all and with standard cams and valve springs, you should be good for around 6,000 rpm. Regards, Paul.
