Changed the front fork oil seals on my 2005 Bullet Sixty5 using our host's helpful guide. The " Spring stud nuts " were undone easily with the bike's weight on the ground. However tightening them is proving difficult, even with the front suspension fully compressed the slider stud turns with the nut. Is there any way of holding the slider stud to prevent this ?

Hi Guys---------Yes, this can be a bit frustrating because when you were at the dismantling stage I bet that thread had been filled with Aluminium from the surrounding fork slider and was a bit of a pig to remove ??.........and now , just when you want it to remain still, it won't !!

Over the years I've tried several methods which you might like to consider?...........1) Loctite the thread into the Aluminum.................2) Wedge a piece of broken matchstick between the thread and surrounding slider...........3) Instead of the matchstick fit an 8BA grubscrew,........... 4) Use a socket on a 1/2" drive airgun with short, sharp bursts to catch the stud "unawares" so to speak..............That one works for me....Don't forget the sealing washer !!

Hi, if you saw a bit off the dome nut(which is quite long) you can hold the stud by inserting a file tag into the bottom while threading the short nut on. The rest of the dome nut will then screw on and lock it . Vince

The easy way, if you have access to one, is to use an impact wrench (air or electric) as stated above.



I wonder if you could insert a piece of dowel in from the top and jam it against the hole in the stud top nut? That's how you do it on Japanese bikes in the absence of a burp gun (except you use a bit of broom handle rather than a dowel, they have a bigger hole in the top of the stanchions).

Maybe cut a slot in bottom of stud to hold with screwdriver, then run an ordinary nut up and down to clear the threads?
