The Constellation and the early Meteor are two different bikes with different carb needs, I don't think it will be jetted the same?.

Fuel demand for the Concentric is different from the Monobloc by -20% so jetting must be altered to suit. l'd guess that for the pre-Mono carbs it would be the same. Also note, Meteor was fitted with air filter as standard so jet to suit if you haven't got one. Also make sure the filter is clean. I'd start with electrics though. REgards, Mark

Mark, My new 928 carby arrives in a couple of days. I need one anyway as the slide is tight in the bore. If the new carby doesn't fix it I will pull the distributor apart and have a look at it. The condenser tests ok on the bench but I will try to replace that also. The points and cables are new so that just leaves the coil and I don't have a spare 6 volt one but it tests ok on the bench as well. Does anyone know the resistance of the primary and secondary?

Hi Creakey sorry for late reply. My 928 carb is set as follows: 3.5 throttle valve, 106 needle jet, pilot jet (its a premier) 17, needle is in mid position (pos no 2) & the main jet is a 250. NO air cleaner or air filter fitted. Sorry cant help regarding the distributor but there is a chap I've bumped into on vmcc runs who runs a Meteor - I never asked him how but he has converted his distributor to electronic ignition; perhaps next time I bump into him i'll ask for more details? best regards Mark

Thanks Mark, I have a range from 190 to 260 to try when I get the carby. It comes with a 3 slide and 106 needle jet but I have a 3.5 which I think will fit.

On a 1953 Meteor I rebuilt a few years back, there was misfiring, despite there being a new condenser fitted in the distributor. I remotely mounted on the frame another new one, bought at a motor factors and connected to the points via a length of wire and this fixed it. This machine was fitted with a type 76 [if not it was an 89] remote float Amal carb and I had to fit a new slide to that, as well, after both these changes, it ran like new.

BW, That's good news to me. Did you use a 6 volt cond. or any old cond. I have a spare which gives twice as big a kick on the ohmmeter on high range when tested on the bench which means it has approx twice the capacity. I put that in and the bike ran just the same, badly. I pulled the dist back plate off and the bob weights and springs look perfect. Also if I substitute a coil can anyone give details about what type I could use for testing. eg 6 or 12 volt? resistance? car or bike type? PS When testing the cond. I note there is no leakage current on either one which is what we should expect.

My Honda had these symptoms and I found that the previous owner had fitted a car-specific coil. As I worked next-door to a Honda dealer, I bought a genuine Honda coil, and holy smoke! the bike was cured. Before this episode, I had hair.

I'm resurrecting this old chestnut as my Meteor is driving me round the bend. I bought a new 928 Amal Concentric Premier, jetted 106 needle, 200 main, 3.5 slide and have tried all 3 slots. It accelerates fine but at very little throttle it spits and f.... until I open it up. It actually feels like an electrical fault but as it performs so well with more throttle I would doubt it. I have replaced the points, plugs, leads, condenser, distributor cap and the timing is spot on. I have not replaced the coil but it bench tests OK. 1.5 ohms primary and 6000 ohms secondary. I have also tried another rotor which was actually a bit shorter than mine but it made no difference to the fault. With the carby I tried a 3.0 slide, also no change. I tried a 210 main jet but apart from that I have not experimented with other main jets as WOT is fine. The manifold is leak free and flat with good gaskets and I have sprayed WD40 round it with the motor running and it does not falter. My distributor chain is fairly loose (no adjustment available)but I don't really suspect that. The compression is good but I have not had the heads off. The PO put free flowing silencers on which I hate as it is so loud. Could this be the problem?
