Hi Adrian

The cap and lead are both visually fine and the multimeter tells me that they are to spec.

And, to be fair, while some of our chums (above) refer to numerous problems, I think we need to remind ourselves that there are thousands of these units out there and a handful who have experienced some problems.

Indeed, I couldn’t find Humbernut’s thread, but I did find some who had experienced problems because (as it turned out) they had routed the kill-switch wire next to an HT lead and one guy, in particular, who launched something of a diatribe against BT-H - accusing them of repeatedly returning a unit that was still faulty – until he re-read the installation instructions, recognised his own mistake, and penned a much less wordy apology. Oh, and another chap who discovered that his drive pinion had slipped on the shaft – which wouldn’t appear to be BT-H’s fault, either.

Anyhoo, I spoke to BT-H yesterday morning (who were very helpful and even declined to sell me a spare coil “…because they are bullet proof”) and then to Paul who invited Slo Poke down to Wales for a brief holiday.

So – with Slo Poke on his way as I write this - hopefully, we’ll have a definitive answer over the next 48 hours.

If there was a good supply of the auto advance/retard units, those of us with pre-EFI/Electra-X Indian and late Redditch Bullets could all fit Lucas SR1 magnetos...

The BT-H on ASBO12 has been fine and I'm hopeful of the same for the one on ASBO14, but I'll be interested to see what the actual problem turns out to be.

Well…It all works, but we’re not sure why – which is both pleasing and somehow unsatisfying.

Just prior to taking it to Performance Classics, I had given the blade terminals a bit of a tweak (so they fitted more tightly to the terminals on the coil) and cut down and re-assembled the HT lead (because I’d noticed that the screw on the plug terminal had wandered at an angle and was poking through the insulation). I didn’t try to start him, after that, as I was worried about burning an exhaust valve due to some bonkers timing.

And then Paul checked the timing, which was fine, had a general fiddle around, and searched for strong consistent spark. Having not found one, it looked like the magneto would be BT-H bound until, on a whim, Paul took a swing at the kickstart and the engine burst into life.

After a few more test starts – which were all fine – Paul then took Slo Poke for a 10 mile run, and everything ran like gangbusters and BT-H told Paul that, if it would start, it would run.

So who knows? Paul tells be that there was a little waxy material sitting in the drain plug on the carb – and I am reminded that 99% of all ignition problems are carburation problems (and vice versa, obviously).

Or, maybe, my terminal tweaking and lead fettling cured the fault? Maybe Paul found and cured something, without knowing it?

Anyway, I’ll sticking a couple of hundred miles on Slo Poke, next week, and then about a thousand more, in Europe, starting the 23rd, so we’ll see I guess.

Congratulations on getting the bike running again. Maybe pack a mini-Whisperer in the holiday toolkit! :)

To keep you informed, Slo Poke returned home from his Uncle Paul's and started first kick.

Test run on Thursday.

I'm sure it will run just fine.

Meanwhile, as a treat for my spare'61 Redditch Bullet engine, THIS showed up this morning:

To update this post, I had an identical problem twice over the weekend and, on both occasions, it was caused by one of the LT wires coming loose on the coil.

So, I'll be soldering them during the week.

The quality and fit of "standard" ¼" 15A female blade terminals can vary quite a bit.

@ Johnny:

If you have something lengthy to put on here, write it up in 'notesblock' or 'wordpad' or something similar. Then, copy and paste to the forum. This also gives you time to spell check and other things..
