Hello. I discovered some teeth broken off my rear sprocket on my 2010 classic 500 EFI. Any suggestions before getting started. I am currently sourcing parts. I live in Canada.

Welcome. Ignore this if you already know but in a situation like this with extreme wear you must replace both sprockets and the chain as a set. If there is not much sprocket wear you can usually just replace a chain but in this case you will have to do them all. Can you explain broken teeth, actually snapped off or hooked? Either way this looks like neglect or mis-alignment and you should address one or both! REgards, Mark

Hi you dont run a oring chain, chain in my opinion still needs lube for sprocket teeth and chain plates or you run a dry chain on your gearbox spkt a little squirt of chain lube wont go amiss could be to slack a chain.

Hi John, many years ago I once snapped several teeth off my rear sprocket. I think it may have been caused by the combination of having too loose a chain, and hitting a pothole.

There were teeth snapped off the rear sprocket on my bullet recently. This is mainly because you have to remove the whole primary transmission to change the gearbox sprocket on a pre-unit bullet so I just leave the chain and sprockets until it is physically impossible to keep the chain properly adjusted.

As a result, the teeth on the rear sprocket were so badly worn and hooked, the tips started breaking off. Such is the most likely reason for broken sprocket tips, excessive wear. When you get the new one and compare it with the old one, I suspect you'll be surprised by the amount of wear there is. The front sprocket will probably look like an old thruppeny bit. (For the colonials among us, it's a pre-decimal 12 sided coin).

I think you'll need a crankcase cover gasket as well as the chain and sprockets to change the front sprocket on an efi motor. Consider ordering a new tab washer too because they don't always survive to be reused, may as well order it at the same time.

Hi Guys------- Hurrah for the MoT !!..It was during prepping for this annual test that I recently spotted these 3 teeth missing PLUS another individual 3 elsewhere......and judging by the amount of dirt etc. lodged on top of the "stumps" I'd say they had been gone for some time ( ie..before I bought it ).............

If your 2010 Classic Efi has the same, combined brake drum and sprocket that my Bullet '65 has then as well as all the previous advice I'd consider ordering a new set of brake shoes as well from our hosts, preferably with the upgraded linings.........I've already done that and now have no excuse but to get outside and DO THE JOB !! ( Come on Alan, digitus Extractus ).........Image
