Alan l like it! Toady, that might explain the cut in the case, someone may have hacksawed a slot in the previous bolt/screw. This kind of trivial problem can cause quite a lot of bother when you don't know what the original should look like! After the bother you've had so far l'd be very careful with any other problems that arise. Hope the MOT goes ok! REgards, Mark

Meh the 7mm o ring rubber I ordered is too thick to go in the groove so I think I need 6mm. I have ended up cleaning up my existing o ring with some alcohol and giving it a smear of RTV all over - Ducatibond stuff I had in the garage which I used to fit crankcases together on my suzuki. I will leave it all to go off and then add some more RTV and see if it is still leaking a bit form the bottom seam. My chaincase cover does not seem like a good fit at all but I tightened it up as best I could hand tight without thinking I am overdoing it.

Given the ham-fistedness of the hacksaw cut on your level screw and lack of thought about what was put in there to replace it (yes, they have a nippy little dome-topped slotted screw in there as standard which is very easy to both burr or crossthread so I can see how they landed up with a problem), I would be very suspicious that vigorous overtightening has already been carried out at some point in the past, leading to your current issue. The fact it was supplied with a spare o-ring but didn't have it fitted suggests a little misdirection in that respect too.



I do wonder if just replacing the cover would be a better option given the time and expense it seems to be putting you to? They aren't all that expensive.

Well touch wood the rtv stuff I smeared on the oring with my fingers before fitting seems to have done the trick as the bottom seam of the case is dry.


It looks like there is a good 1 - 2mm gap at the top which closes a bit at the ends when tightened down on the o ring, I am not sure if that is normal or not.






I have found another leak now, it seems to be leaking from the gearbox drain nut, I tried tightening it a bit but that didnt work so will undo it and check the washer. I have some SAE 140 classic hypoid gear oil to replace what comes out.

I can highly recommend the use of bonded seal (Dowty) washers on as many of the oiltight bolts and screws as you can.

140 gear oil? In the chaincase?
I would think that is far too thick.

I am fed up with this persistant leak of ATF so I am going to town on it using some 6mm oring material and a generous bead of RTV front and back before tightening it all down will wait until tomorrow and pour in 420ml of ATF. It cant be that bad as quite a bit was in there but its annoying all the same. I hope this seals it.

Grrr I had the atf all measured out and the funnel ready for some reason bike on side stand and funnel was too horizonal. I know I will bend the plastic funnel up with the spout in the filler hole, snap end of plastic funnel now in chaincase. After half an hour of trying to fish it out off the cover comes and I have to clean up and start again!
