Hi Guys-------- I haven't done it myself yet but I often think that the central bolt ought to have a collar fitted over it to prevent over tightening....

Alan R That's not a bad idea. When I do up this bolt I am trying to remember how much I did it up last time. The time interval means that I would not have a clue but with a collar, if one could be fitted it would be done up to the same place every time. I must give it some thought and try to see if it can be done the next time that I have the cover off.

Sorry to re-visit an old thread but I have a question for contributor "Tv". You suggested making a gasket from polyethylene closed cell foam sheet, and I intend trying this on my other bike's gearbox casing. I assume that you did not use any kind of gasket "goo" when following this procedure:am I right? Any comments, insulting or otherwise, welcome. Thanks!

I had an idea of using a thicker rubber bead. You can buy this stuff by the metre on Ebay, example here, item: 121060637076. You could join the ends with super glue but I've not found it necessary if you cut the ends at an angle. The thicker bead gives you a bit more leeway if the case is distorted.

Hi Binary----- on my last Bullet I modified the tappet inspection cover bolt in the same way ie}-- Remove the fitted threaded hex. item and replace with a bolt and collar of same dimensions.... This allows you to use ordinary spanners to adjust the push-rods.....and prevents over-tightening..

Hi I have been doing a bit of work on the bike now that we have had some good weather yesterday started the bike and gave the chaincase a clean with a rag afterwards. I got right down and looked under the bike to try and see where the leak was coming from.

Now it looks like I have no leak from the back of the chaincase which is good as it saves having to remove it but I found a glaring ly obvious leak that I had not thought of before.

For some reason a previous owner or someone has taken a saw to the chaincase under where the plug goes or at least thats what it looked like. When I first bought the bike I thought it was a crack but was just a saw mark and thought no more of it as it isnt too deep but it is causing the plug to leak quite badly.

Any ideas on sealing that up?

Also there is a bit of a drip from the bottom seam of the chaincase so I may go down the route of the other suggestions here using a bit of rtv or a thicker gasket as well but there is an obvious leak from that plug that I had not notice before. I am tall and big so getting down to that level to inspect is an effort.

Ah, a bodger's work is never done! That does look like a possible cause though it may not be the only one. Get that welded if you're fussy, if not, clean it very thoroughly and fill it with Araldite, let it set proper hard and cut it back with a file. Should be near invisible. That should get you back on the road! In the meantime I had some trouble sealing the case on my Trials Bullet and finally found that the dowel at the front was too short (may have been made by a PO,) and wasn't engaging with the hole in the outer cover, consequently the cover wouldn't pull down true onto the rubber seal. Easily fixed after I got some 1/4" mild steel rod at Kempton Park autojumble. By the way, I tried to find out the SAE 'thickness' of ATF to compare against fork oil as it is sometimes recommended for forks and I couldn't find any specific data but the general opinion seemed to be somewhere between 8 and 15w so not that far from the 20w originally specified.

Cheers mark I will give the araldite a try that sounds like a good idea also will probably take the oring out and check for gaps with a feeler gauge and put back with some silicon.

I have my mot booked for Friday so I want to try and get some of the worst oil leaks fixed as it looks bad leaving oil everywhere I go.
