Hi Guys

I recently bought a semi restored 1958 Connie from our hosts and would like some advice.

Firstly I would like to do a 12v conversion but there appears to be a few ways of doing this. Which would you recommend? As it is magneto is it worth changing this for distributor and 12v coil?
Secondly why does the connie use manual advance and retard? Is this the most reliable setup?
I want a bike that looks good but one I can ride and enjoy so reliability is much more important than authenticity.

Any advice is gratefully appreciated

If the mag works leave it alone until it doesn't! Manual adv/ret was considered 'better' for sporting bikes when it was built but in use it doesn't cause any problems, you'll soon get the hang of it.

If you're keeping the original switch gear probably the best way to go about it would be to adapt a 6V Connie wiring diagram with the unnecessary wiring deleted (12V is simpler) and a modern regulator/rectifier unit replacing the original Lucas rectifier in the same position. If your bike still has the original alternator fitted, and it is still good (stator coils and wiring undamaged, rotor magnets not too badly faded) it can be wired to give full output via the reg/rectifier. If not and you have to fit a Lucas RM21 or similar the new alternator will do this anyway. Then it's just a question of the live feed to the ammeter and thence to your lights, 12V battery (don't forget the fuse), horn etc, sort out some good earth wiring and it should all just work. There will be enough oomph in the RM21 to power indicators as well if you want to fit them for modern riding conditions.



If you want some all-in-one switchgear the left side handlebar switch from a post 1999 classic Bullet can be adapted, while you can leave the original light switch in the headlamp casquette to keep the looks (and plug a hole).



Keeping the magneto (I would if it's a good 'un, it's nice not to have to depend on the battery for your ignition) also keeps the rest of the wiring simpler.

whichever way you decide to go, fit a modern regulator rectifier. do this even if you decide to stay with 6v.It will give you good electrics & keep the battery healthy. Manual adv/retard ignition is fine, you soon get used to it so don't worry. If the mag ever does decide to go awol then there are better & cheaper solutions than distributor conversion you're thinking of. Best regards, Mark

Thanks for the advice guys and I'm liking the electronic ignition magneto. I'm definitely doing a 12v conversion. my connie has a standard 6v alternator but have not started the restoration yet as buying a house, getting married and a tad busy at the moment. I plan on starting the restoration this winter.
