Incredibly grateful for all the advice and especially the incredibly generous offers of in-person help! I'm AL10 which is just above 50 miles from NN12, but I really don't want to drag anyone such a long distance! I'll try and work things out first. And thank you Alan R for the hint about uploading pictures!
Update so far: I bought a multimeter and battery charger. I couldn't find my battery model online (Platinum CTZ7S?) but looking at similar models I think it's an AGM so a sealed unit, so I haven't tried to top it up. The fully charged light came on on the charger after only a few hours, so I don't think the problem is with the battery, and indeed after putting it back in the electrics are still not working. The multimeter seems to be broken (only registering 0V despite testing on multiple AA/AAA batteries) so I can't verify anything, but I'm replacing it tomorrow. Strangely, occasionally when I fiddle with the wires and try the indicator, it comes on but only for a heart beat. So maybe that means it's not a fuse issue, but a dodgy connection. It's possible I rested my chain and padlock on a grey/black wire coming out of what I think is the back of the timing cover.
Tomorrow I suppose I'll start taking things apart with a multimeter, starting from the battery and going towards the alternator and replacing the connections, and see if replacing any fuses helps, once I find where they're stored. Then maybe drain the oil and have a look at the alternator - I have a feeler gauge and I need to change the oil anyway. I'll update with my findings!
By the way, how do I get paragraphs to work on this message board? It keeps deleting my line spacings!
