The idea that they are being hoarded, whether standard, customised well or customised badly, makes sense. They were after all the last of the dinosaurs, so to speak, which was of course part of their appeal when still in production, so they are being considered as future valuables.

Ed, I checked ebay too, there's usually a selection of 350s but only one classic engine 500 on there last night.

Run down iron barrel? When they were or are available they are normally in good nick.A non starter maybe?.Very rarely seen a basket case.Stands testimony to the type of owner who owns these motorcycles.Give it another 10 years.

You know. Having thought about it. I've not seen a single UCE Enfield on the road around here. They've all been iron barrels, with the odd Electra X. When the UCE's first came out. There was a glut of iron barrels on the market. My guess that owners of iron barrels bought UCE's, found that they didn't like them and bought iron barrels again. My guess is; People are hanging onto their iron barrels.

Problem is they're not quite old enough to beat the ultra low pollutant levels currently being proposed :(

You could end up with a bike you have to pay £12.50 every time you take it out for a ride if you're unfortunate enough to live in or near a ULEZ.

Sorry - that should have read YOUNG enough, current proposals for any Ultra Low Emission Zone will apply to any motorcycle registered BEFORE 1 July 2007, Only those registered after that date (ie EuroIII or EuroIV engines will be exempt).

Give it a few years and all these bobber things will be up for sale again when the next fad hits. Thankfully, the bullets can have this done by bolting bits off and on and so can easily be returned back to some semblance of normality. There are a lot of semi/future classic Japanese bikes out there which have been effectively wrecked due to this fashion, subframes and frame lugs chopped off, unobtainable airboxes and mudguards binned etc.

Ooooo. Don't start me on bobbers! I've seen a number for sale, by (so called) customisers. They ask extortionate amounts of money for their two wheeled abominations. I don't think of these people as customisers. I think of them as rapists. They take a perfectly good Enfield and then they 'rape' it. I saw a 535 Lightning on Ebay that had been 'raped'. The front mudguard now served as the rear, etc. I wanted to ask the seller if he still had the parts to turn the bike back into a Lightning. Grrrrr!!!
