I have just received one of our host's Stroker Crank & 87mm Forged Piston. I am installing these in my 1957 R.E. "Indian" Woodsman which I have owned since 1966. Naturally, in order to accomplish this, the Cases on this engine had to be split for the 1st time in 61 years. Here is the question: When I put the cases back together, what's the recommended long lasting, leak free sealer to use between the joining surfaces?

A product called 3-Bond, used to be called Yamabond and was (obviously) the original Yamaha sealant. Available in the UK from Rex's Speed Shop (Rex Caunt).

As Mark says, Threebond, but there are a number of different types, you need Threebond 1215 for air cooled engine's, some of the others are designed for water cooled engine's and go hard and brittle if they get too hot, don't ask how I known this.

just as a matter of interest, which side of the Atlantic are you? As far as I know all the original Woodsman models were sold in the USA, and if you have had this one for the last 52 years, this rather pre-dates the re-import of Indian badge models that started a few years ago.



Hope the 612 upgrade goes well, pictures of this model always welcome!

Thanks for all the feedback. I do have some fresh Wellseal & Hylomar on hand but was wondering what the experts are using. I'll look for some Threebond 1215. Anyway, good observation on the bike Adrian. Yes, I'm on the other side of the Atlantic in the USA. And yes, it's Redditch built but titled & badged as an "Indian". The bike always draws a crowd wherever we go and most people just can't figure it out. Many, I'm sure probably think it's a fake. Fun old bike, though. I take it to an occasional show, but mostly just enjoy throwing some gravel with it on the many dirt roads near my house. I'd post a picture if I knew how to do that. Also, I have bought a lot of things for this bike over the years from our host and can't say enough good things about them.

Just to clarify, the 3-Bond is for use on the main crankcase metal-to-metal joints, it has gap filling properties that suit this application. For joints that use gaskets I favour Welseal but others use Hylomar or similar.

Hope there's not a big problem here. I test fitted the new Crank in the cases today. Drive side first & spun OK. I then put the timing side on and it still spun OK, until I snugged up a few fasteners. Then the new Crank would not turn. The thrust washers, bearings & spacers were all in their proper places. The old Crank spun easily before disassembly so tomorrow I'll try to put it back in to see what happens.
