As I need to purchase an Amal 1 inch monobloc for my 1962 Norton model 50, does it have to have 068 stamped alongside the 376, cheers, David

Hi Fireflake----------------- this is extracted from AMAL's site}-----Monobloc Carburetters - Carburetter type number e.g 376 or 389, followed by size designation.
376 series, size designations are: 1516 for 15/16" bore diameter, 1616 for 1" bore diameter and 1716 for 1 1/16" bore diameter.
389 series, size designations are: 3632 for 1 1/8" bore diameter, 3732 for 1 1/16" bore diameter. Both series are only available in right hand adjuster form, 'Short' float bowl versions ('S' designation) are available

From what I can remember the last time I used a Monobloc those numbers you mention refer to the jetting fitted at the factory.....I'd strip and check to see what you actually have and compare with the Norton owners manual etc..

Fireflake, I think what you're asking is does the /068 mean anything special about the carb body itself? To which the answer is no, this number just indicates what internal parts were fitted when it left the Amal factory, obviously so that the fitter didn't have to take it apart to find out. The body itself will be standard as Alan says. You can fit whatever jets you like to a bare body and it will work as the original equipment was intended as long as the bore size is as specified in the Amal or Norton books. If you are a real rivet counter you'll want the correct numbers stamped on of course....

Hello again David -- and thanks to MarkM for his corroboration about those Mark-ings ( groan !!)...

OK, So I'm now going to open the "flood gates" and ask}----- "Will you be fitting a genuine, Amal carb as supplied via our hosts"......OR ---- "Will you be fitting a Wassell Replica carb ??" ..........It's been discussed on this Forum ( and many I suspect ) before and can be on par with "What oil shall I use ?" --- "What's the best tyres to use ?" ----- and "How fast can I make my Bullet with an OE piston go ?" in terms of Forum pages used.........

According to the listings I have, the 376/68 carb, is correct for Norton model 50 1957-63, and the original specs. would have been 1" bore/pilot jet 30/throttle cutaway 3.5/ main jet 210/needle jet .106/needle 2nd. groove. Hope this helps.
