Hi Alan

Thanks for getting back.... The valves are definitely not being held open... I'm begging in to thing there might be some shite in the tank or something like it... I've checked the float bowl and it's clean.. Jets are 220 main and 106 needle... Not touched the idle jet yet... I think there is a problem with the fuel flow keeping up with the engine demand... The carb tickles OK but seems to take a while... So I'm going to have the tap out and make sure its all clear before chucking a fresh gallon in..

Well I thought drain the fuel from the tank... So I put a piece of hose on and turned tap to reserve expecting poor flow but no... Fuel flow is perfect Well I drained a gallon off and put it back... Was hoping for piss poor flow..So its not fuel starvation... At least no problem with feed from tank to carb..... Grrrr... Must be ignition.. But there's a good spark...

but in the right place?
It could be a blocked idle circuit (even if the jet is clear). The higher fuel level after tickling will permit the engine to start and run for a few revolutions before the excess fuel is used up and then it needs fuel from the idle circuit to continue working. If its blocked and there isn't any it then cuts out...

AlanR 'How do you compensate with the ignition dot setting........What difference did you notice ??.... Was it worth doing ??......'

sorry for the late reply, been a busy being ill !
The ignition remains unchanged you get all the timing marks aligned and gently pull the inlet cam out without moving any of the other gears (a cocktail stick or two jammed in between the idler gears will prevent a lot of headache) then rotate it and replace. A very low or no cost upgrade if the gasket is reusable and if both wheels are up on planks so the bike leans over much further, there's very little oil loss. There's no noticeable loss of power from the bottom end but it makes it much easier for the engine to rev from the midrange onwards.

Cant get over that there has been over 100 posts on this, i just bored my iron barrel to 535spe s fitted the piston, lapped in the valves while head was off and reassembed no problems went well but cbucked indian micarb and fitted 32mm jap mikuni now running 26degrees btdc and pod and semimega muffler also our hosts close ratio gearsin the box goes Iike a train in top also runs a 19tooth gearbox spkt to keep revs down on freeways much etter than the uce i bought runs the legs off it. Just do it and enjoy.

I stripped carb yesterday and checked it through through. All fuel ways are completely clear..No crud in the carb at all.. Clean as a whistle with good flow from the tank.

I completely reset the Boyer ignition timing (Removed stator and rotor and reinstalled it according to the instructions), fitted a new plug.. Engine started easily, second kick, and ran for about a minute and then "as usual" cut out again as soon as i blipped the throttle!..

I've ordered a replacement float from Mr H. I'm really getting miffed with this one..

If I can just say AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARgh!!!!! it may be beneficial.. thank you!

After much wasting time and popping and banging I ordered a number 3 slide only to discover that the carb body was warped... So I bit the Bullet... Very nearly literally and shelled out for a new Mk1 Premium Concentric from our hosts.. It arrived yesterday and was duly bolted on.. Well to cut a long story short It worked... A new pair of tyres and some insurance and the 535 GT Clubman S will be on the road... My Target was to be on the road for the spring and Ive made it with a couple of weeks to spare.. Thanks for all the tips and pointers etc.. Work can now start on the Meteor..
