I am fixing a charging problem on a friend's Electra. The blown reg/rect had 5 wires, 3 yellow ones to the alternator and red and black. (pos and neg).It was well and truly open circuit so we ordered a new one but it has 7 wires.(2 yellows, 2 blacks, 2 red/whites and a red) The yellows appear to be connected together (inside) as do the blacks. The blacks, (I presume ground) are also connected to the casing. After hours of research I can not find a schematic of any Enfield having 7 wires to the reg/rect. I see someone talking about a charging light and wonder if that has anything to do with the other 2 wires. Any help out there please? The alternator has 5 wires coming from it, 3 for the 3 phase alternator and I guess the other 2 are for the CDI.

You can use a generic 3 phase reg/rectifier with 3 yellow AC wires to connect to the 3 yellow wires on the alternator stator and a red and black wire for the 12V supply and the earth respectively (the Electra-X is -ve earth same as all modern bikes). You can use the Boyer Power Box (with built-in capacitor) 200004A from our hosts, or this sort of thing.

The other 2 alongside the 3 yellow wires are indeed from the ignition trigger, though it's TCI rather than CDI.

Have you asked supplier why the item supplied is not the same as fitted to the bike?

Adrian, I stand corrected. It IS TCI. But the alternator has 3 wires on one connector and 2 others and it is those two that go to the TCI. The reg/rect itself (the incorrect one) has 7 wires and that is where I had the problem, but, no worries. The company in India have agreed to send us the 5 wire type at no cost as it was their mistake. And this answer's Tim's question too. I have done a temporary fix by using 2 of the 3 wires from the alternator and connecting to a spare reg/rect I had as per the usual 4 wire alternator which as you know uses 2 wires for the rectifier and 2 for the AC lights. Works just fine, charges well and it does not matter which 2 of the 3 wires from the alternator I use.

It sounds like you were originally sent the regulator/rectifier for the (later) home market 350 Electra (EFI?), not the Export 500 Electra-X, I'm glad the supplier is sending you the correct one, which will get **all** of your stator charging again.

Adrian, Do you know what the extra wires were for and what is the difference in the charging circuit between the 350 and 500.

Not without sight of a wiring diagram for the home market 350 Electra for the correct year, 2004 onwards (earlier models were CDI rather than TCI, different again!). I don't think it's in the Snidal manual but you might find one on line.

For those who are interested, Tim has answered my question. The 7 wire reg/rect is for the Electra Kickstart and is connected to a single phase alternator with 2 wires. The other 2 wires probably run the lights on AC but I'm not sure. They may just boost the input to the rectifier.The Electric start Electra needs to have a better charge rate because of the starter motor so it has a 3 phase alternator, hence requiring the 3 yellow wires. They connect to the reg/rect and the output is on the other 2 wires (total 5) which connect to the battery etc. This means the lights are run from DC so you have full brightness even when idling. That's my take on it anyhow!

That's it. The alternator stator with the three yellow wires puts the entire output through the reg/rectifier, giving 12 DC to power everything.



At a glance the 500 Electra's alternator and handlebar switch gear seem to have a strong Suzuki influence. When I fitted a Mikuni carb with a push/pull throttle I fitted a Suzuki R/H switch cluster as that had the twin pull twist grip, but was otherwise almost identical to what RE (India) had fitted, down to the switches.
