On my Electra-X I usually managed with just the 18mm (⅜"Whitworth) hex plug on the end cover undone, using a pair of long-nosed pliers to toggle the inner cable end into the slot on the inner mechanism on the gearbox, cable adjuster on the box screwed right in, then fit the other end to the handlebar clutch lever followed by final adjustments.

The gearbox sprocket nut is 50mm across the flats, I treated myself to a new ring spanner - pricey - though a box spanner might be cheaper.

You will need these to remove the cable the gear box end and tale the petrol tank off so you can see the route the cable takes:-

binary, there is no gearbox level plug on my Electra X (ish) either, (the workshop manual and the owners manual are lying.) I just fill the gearbox up to the bottom of the large filler hole. (That corresponds with the 450cc amount of gearbox oil anyway.)

Perhaps a mid model change in gasket design now prevents oil escaping from the Allen bolt level plug as a higher oil level may have proven beneficial. I owned an early ElectraX and once removed oil would emerge from the Allen bolt hole. This particular bolt seated onto a soft washer. My ownership ended when the hardened surface of the big end delaminated and circulated around the engine along with the engine oil. Never had any gearbox problems though ;)
