Am I correct in believing that painted RE England parts do not have a part-number that identifies their colour ? They simply retain the bare metal part number and the same can be said for sub-assemblys ?

That's correct John. Some of the Parts Books have a list of the colours which were standard for a given model in a given year. They seem to have put it wherever it will fit, sometimes the front page, sometimes further in. For instance, the list for the 1960 Meteor Minor is on page 26 and lists the colours and then explains how to add the colour to the part number so a Polychromatic Burgundy front mudguard is 43735 PB. It also warns that if you don't specify a colour it will be sent in black or the "standard colour applicable to the machine"!
