Peter, if you send the engine and frame numbers to the Chairman of the Royal Enfield Owners Club at [email protected] he will tell you what the Factory Despatch books say about your bike. This is not a Dating Certificate which you would need to apply for a registration number though. If you could also send him the number stamped on top of the gearbox and also confirm whether that same number is stamped on the front of the engine that will also help him with some other research he is doing. Can you tell us a bit more about the bike, even post a picture?

Thanks Mark, I will follow that up. I have disassembled the bike apart from the engine and gearbox. Happy tp post a photo, but sorry, I don't know how. There doesn't seem to be a place in the chat to do it.

Thanks Mark M, the bike is a good foundation, but really the only parts that I know for certain are sound are the engine and gear box. The front wheel is currently being rebuilt, re chromed new spokes etc. The clutch is derelict but is able to be rebuilt which I am doing. The electrics will have to be done from scratch, although I have the loom that came with it. The back wheel is very stiff, so that will have to be investigated. All the handle bar gear is missing, so will have to be sourced. Although the bike has been resprayed, I am not sure about the colour and would like to know what the original colour was. So altogether a project for long summer evenings.

Peter, new wiring harness is available from Hitchcocks, you could make your own but for the cost I don't think it's worth it if you're not doing some custom electrics. Mind you, I realise postage costs are an issue for you guys abroad. The rear wheel tightness may be the lack of, or the wrong spacer inside the speedo drive, this is not well illustrated in either the Parts Book or the Workshop Manual and if it isn't present or the wrong thickness it will lock the rear wheel and punch the centre out of the speedo drive into the bargain. The off side (right hand) spacer between the drive and the swing arm is also a part that comes in several sizes and again, if too tight or loose can cause problems although it's unlikely to lock the wheel. The brake shoes can also bind in the drum especially if the brake rod is not attached, you sometimes need to have a bit of tension on the rod to just hold the shoes off the drum. Colours I'm not sure about, I think it depends on whether your bike was a Sports or a Deluxe, the Sports being chrome guards and the tank top in the same colours as the Deluxe, the Deluxe colours being Polychromatic Burgundy or Peacock Blue tank top, toolbox lids and mudguards. But other colours were optional from the Factory!

I have managed to position the large seal in the inner primary case, with a little grease, and overcoming the fear that I may bre3ak it.
Yes the postage can be high depending upon weight and volume, but the exchange rate of Aust $ to the pound makes me think before I order each time.
