Hi, I have a pre war Royal Enfield 350 sv. When I went to start it the other day, I tickled the carb, (Amal 274) as usual but no fuel came out of the hole, kept tickling it but nothing.. Took the float bowl top off and the fuel was about 2/3 the way up with the bowl floating. I pushed the bowl down, expecting the chamber would flood with fuel, but it just stayed the same. Not knowing if this was right, I went for a spin and after a short distance it started misfiring a lot. When I got back I checked the float chamber and there wasn't much fuel in it..
I drained the tank and checked the filter in the tap, and the fuel line, but that seemed fine. Am I missing something?
Regards.

Hi Gaz. Fuel is not getting to the float bowl, so you may well have a blockage. Another possibility [and I've encountered this one] is there may be just the 'on' tap intended as part of a pair fitted, this will cause the carb to run dry while there will appear to be a good bit of fuel still in the tank. If you remove the fuel tap, check to see if it has a 'standpipe' of about 1 1/2" long within the filter gauze, if it does, there's the culprit! Regards, Paul.

Hi. There was no stand pipe in the gauze and it looked clean and clear from crud. I blew through the fuel line so that is clear. Enough fuel gets to the bowl to float the it, but she I push it down I would have thought more fuel would fill it right up so it flooded out.. But it doesn't.

All I did in the end was loosen the fuel cap and the fuel flowed fine.. But then the float chamber just flooded constantly. I was advised to fit an O ring under the float cap to raise it, this seemed to stop the flooding, but now there is due leaking from the hole in the thread on the main body of the carb. It's been suggested I need to lower the fuel level in the float chamber, but how is that done?
