I think? it appeared after trying to kick start her, heard an odd noise on a kick back. All still works. There must be a very small hole through to a source of oil.As once cleaned out oil is seeping back. I tried pocking a thin wire in the hole, but would not go through. Will give it a drain and see whats what. hopefully find some metal, patch the hole up and off we go.

As it is a small hole I think that you should get away with using chemical metal or similar once you clean all traces of oil from the hole.....It would be wise to take the outer covers off to see what has happened inside if you think something has attacked it from inside. (Remember that the nut on the end of the mainshaft is a left hand thread.)

Hi Guys------Ooo-err, that's got me worried so I've been out to The Red Baron ( a 2014 Bullet'65 ) to take some photos .. It's actually 23.47 which is why the photos are dark..........No sign of any hole at the moment...Image

I to have the "hole". It is in my 2003 5 speed gearbox, that I put on my 1964 350 bullet. I have taken a picture of it from another angle and you can see it better. It appears to be just a casting mark, or done with a drill at the factory. I can not poke even a very thin piece of wire in it. I can scrape all around the hole but it goes no where just a blank end. It is about 3 to 4 mm deep.

Oooo--AHHHHHHrrr !! The grey light of dawn has penetrated my Brayun (?) so I went to have another look, and this time from the same angle as BINARY and YES !!---- I do have one as well......

They all look to be in the same place and of the same type ie}--- too clean and accurate-looking to be a blow hole or an inclusion in the Aluminium casting.....My guess is that they were used as part of locating the gearbox body in position when it was being machined....probably by sitting onto a small, protruding stub..??

After examining the hole in my gear box case and looking at Alan R's hole I agree with him. It looks like a hole to locate the gear box part on an assembly line. Alan's picture is clearer than mine and I was able to down load it and blow it up to a bigger size. Strange
how I never noticed it before 555 put it up on the forum. Oh well old age bad eyes dark garage forgot the glasses there are any number of things that can be blamed for me not seeing it before. It seems that there is always some strange thing or other popping up with RE motorcycles.

I took a look at the 5 speeders on our race bikes and where that hole is in the pics above, we have a small, raised 'bump' on ours, as if the castings have been beefed up a little in that area. I have another 5 speeder opened up at present, also with the 'bump' and it [and the holes in the ones seen here] are adjacent to the front top stud location for the carrier plate studs inside the gearbox.
