I would seriously reccomend checking your chains or better still buying a European made one from our hosts. Detail here

Basically, 5 month old chain broke because two pins were not correctly peened over and were only holding the side plate on by friction.

I got away lightly, a tow home, a new chain and gasket and a few days without a ride.

I put a Renolds chain on bike just after buying the bike new for the same reason. now 10.000 kilometres later it is still like new and never needs adjusting. quality well worth it.

I junked the original diamond chain at 7000 because it had very short adjustment periods and have had its replacement, an Iwis chain on there for the last 20000 miles. I've just changed over to a Renolds so time will tell. Sadly chains are not a fit and forget item and I spend more time cleaning and lubing the chain than I do cleaning and polishing the bike, but no amount of maintainance can make up for lacking quality control whatever the item.

After the original chain on my 350 bullet broke after 4,000 miles, I got recovered to the nearest local motorcycle shop.

All they had that would fit was a DID gold x-ring at £££. I landed up geting it because it would have meant a second recovery and ruining my weekend away.

As it happens, that chain lasted for over 30k miles and was only ever adjusted when I changed the tyre. In fact, what killed it was a combination of me moving the crankcase breather outlet to the back of the mudguard and getting it covered in salt on the way back from a dragon rally then forgetting to wash it off. This resulted in a lot of corrosion and a couple of seized links.

So yeah, there's a fair bit to be said for using a modern Japanese x-ring chain.

For excellent advice on the best chain to use, call Andy the Chain Man. He'll be able to tell you (and sell you) the most appropriate chain for whatever bike and whatever you use it for. He doesn't have a website (but contact details are on Google) as he'll only sell when he's talked to you to make sure you get the right chain. Usual disclaimers, satisfied customer etc.

I intend to renew the final drive chain on my C5 this winter, when I fit a larger gearbox sprocket. I do wonder whether or not I should replace the primary chain too. There have been a few horror stories of the chain snapping on account of the stupidly-designed tensioner that applies way too much pressure on the chain and hence, presumably, the bearings. My primary chain is as taut as a bow; if it were adjustable I'd back it off without delay. Has anyone here had any issues with a primary chain on a UCE model?

Hi Guys------A picture = 1,000 words etc.......I'm reminded of that American astronaut who-- when asked if he had been worried just before take-off for the Moon replied something like }---- "About the journey itself ??--- NO, as that's all been planned and worked on by highly qualified Scientists etc over many years....About the take-off ?? well YES, as it occurred to me that I was sat on the top of 200 tons of fuel and manufactured parts all supplied by the cheapest contractor !!".... Hmmm, sound familiar ???..

Co-incidentally I was oiling and adjusting the chain on my 2005 Bullet '65 recently when I noticed that 3 teeth from the rear Drum / Sprocket assy had their tops missing......and judging by the amount of crud on top it was like that when I bought it recently........No matter as the bike is scheduled for an "Intermediate" during this Winter as our Railway friends would say, so that'll be 2 sprockets AND a chain ( might as well put that 19t one on whilst I can.)--- PLUS}--- the 5-plate clutch upgrade, PLUS-- A copper head gasket as the head and barrel will be coming off, if only to find out what the actual set-up is..... And it's not even Bonfire night yet !!
