That is an impressive speed on a 500 Velo. But the conversation was about riding an Electra on the road, not the race track.

True it is about a different bike, it would also appear we have a different view on the term, "fly". In my opinion minor adjustments to carburation etc make little difference, to make a bike "fly" needs major work.

The Parts Book on this site suggests that this is a CV (constant vacuum) carb. This means that under the large domed cap is a rubber diaphragm. This controls the lifting of the slide. These can (and often do) split or pin-hole with age or more rarely if replaced clumsily after a carb rebuild. Excess fuel being burned/used is often a symptom of this problem. That it is happening under acceleration makes me think this could be the cause. Just thank your lucky stars it isn't a 4-cylinder Jap bike where they often go 2 or 3 at a time!

'Fly' is indeed relative - in the case of Enfield's, often derided and laughed at for being pedestrian, getting an uplift of 40% at the back wheel and improving top speed and acceleration from a few modest changes results in 'flying', relatively. In a race context the only person that knows how to make an Enfield fly is Steve Linsdell.

Correction - I apologise I should have included Paul Henshaw in the hall of fame! It was just that Linsdell's 140mph achievement on the IOM this August was front of mind.

Thanks, sofiaspin. That 140 mph is truly remarkable. We had a good day at Mallory Park a few years back when both Steve Linsdell's and our 500 R.E.'s were in the same race - Linsdell won, Tony Davies on our machine came second and everyone else were behind the two R.E.'s, including Seeley G50's and the like. We are racing at Cadwell this weekend, by the way. Regards, Paul.
