Thanks Alan, The old, (presumably original) gasket which I changed for a composite gasket a couple of years back certainly appeared to be made of copper, but as I said began de-laminating when I attempted to anneal it. I've just taken a look at the new one from our hosts and this is made up of three layers, the outer two being copper, the inner some sort of black stuff. I would have thought a copper gasket to have been solid sheet copper, but apparently not. All a bit academic at this stage. Thanks for all your helpful comments.

Hi REG----- Just for interest sake---yes, that new gasket from our hosts that you describe is a Composite gasket, the "Black stuff" is probably Flexible Graphite.....This is not a Copper gasket in the accepted sense ie}--- a single, solid piece of Copper and thus cannot be annealed.......Ride Safe !!

And finally, does a copper composite gasket need re-torquing, and if so after how many miles. Thanks for all replies.

I would say that in any event it's good Engineering practice to go over a new assembly and check the torque figures after it's done a period of service time........When I re-used composite gaskets in the past they needed little or none in the way of Re-torqueing but I also used a thin bead of Blue Hylomar around each opening upon assembly....
