Check to see if fuel is reaching the carb. In my experience if an engine starts briefly, splutters and stops it's often a fuel problem. That is why I asked if the plug is wet after kicking over the engine several times with nothing happening. It may have started briefly on what was left in the float bowl.

pour a small amount of petrol in the plug hole and then try (after refitting the plug of course!!)

If it fires that will eliminate one possible source of the problem

I suggest removing the fuel pipe from the petrol tap and checking the flow. It could be a partial blockage/dirty fuel filter.

If the battery is flat due to the bike not charging? then I don't think the bike will start however much you play with the carb/petrol/spark plug side of things.

Certainly with later 350s with a standard charging system, if the battery is flat, it won't start. They don't self excite. They will start with a very low battery but if there's less than about 9v you have no chance. So first charge the battery then retry. Then find out why it's going flat.

Stinkwheel, you were dead on, started the bike previously on a very low battery, it had obviously gone below the point that it would self excite as you put it. I charged the battery over night, refitted...half a kick, off she went!

Thank you to all who have made suggestions.
