The vm 28 Mikcarb carburettor has a drain pipe. Today for the first time I noticed it drained fuel. If I hadn't seen it, I could have lost a lot of it. When does that happen ? When the float needle is stuck, or when the fuel in the fuel chamber has a too high level ?

The float pivot or the needle itself can be stuck, also check that the float hasn't started filling with fuel. Otherwise you can possibly have a small piece of dirt from the tank preventing the float needle from closing against the float valve seat properly, (genuine Mikunis can do this too), in which case I would recommend a good in-line fuel filter to prevent it happening again.

When you leave your motorcycle unattended for a long time turn the tank tap off. This will stop the fuel flooding the carburettor and when you turn the fuel tap back on again you will be there to see, and stop, the fuel flooding out of the carburettor. Try to never leave a Royal Enfield over night with the fuel still turned on. You could loose a whole tank of fuel onto the garage floor. With the tap turned off this can not happen.
