Similar symptoms would be given by a failing TPS unit which is used mostly at those lower throttle openings. Very very slowly twist the throttle as you check for a smooth continuously increasing output voltage from closed to open throttle. Check out the YouTube video by Singhg5 for what's required on checking fully closed and open voltages. You can also access the TPS voltage output from the purple wire @ pin No5 on the ECU connector as well as the blue/black wire on the TPS connection block if this is more easily accessible.

Why not? Just factor in the cost of the carb conversion and you're sorted. Reliable and strong motor and good gearbox and brakes (well, front one anyway). Oh, and the top of the piston doesn't fall off and you don't need a bottom end rebuild at less than 20k miles or to replace half the engine internals with British stuff.

Check there are no splits in the rubber pipe between the air filter and the throttle body. I think I've read that they should be replaced regularly as part of servicing. They are prone to perishing.
