Hi Allan R - you didn't 're-phrase me' you contradicted me. But that's ok. Everyone to their own view - esp on a message board! But what more do you need to see? I stand by my opinion - that engine is in a 'state' not only because it looks to be and its history confirms it to be but because it is. But I may be wrong - although I think (in this case at least) I'm right! ;-)

I must agree with Alan, it might not be as bad as it looks. I wouldn't necessarily start a full strip down without an assessment.
A lot of what we see could just be surface muck.

Now now boys, in this case everybody's right! We were speculating on a way to approach the rebuild of an unknown engine in theory but now we've seen the condition of the motor in question I think the consensus is to take it apart. Alan's gone one step further in diagnosing the state of the innards but I think the pics say it all. The good news for ET is that he's probably got the best choice of engine/gearbox for a 350 Trials machine, the gearbox in particular being the early type, best choice of the Trials boys. (and as it happens I'm in the process of rebuilding a motor just like this.)

Hi PRESTO--- Sorry, What I actually said was Paraphrase ( to re-state or expand using other words )...I didn't Disagree because we are both saying the same thing ie}-- It's a rough-un, but we do have differing viewpoints as how next to proceed....If it were mine I'd adopt your solution and do a full strip regardless but then I have full Engineering facilities and can do that ( Similar to The Whisperer and Mark M )... However I suspect that our friend has limited facilities / knowledge and thus I suggested the cautious, stage-by-stage approach........ He may well end up doing a full strip, or putting it out to "Contract" as it were anyway....Be interesting to see though, don't you think ??.

Ah------- I actually typed that last one some time ago but have only just inserted it ie}--- I had't seen MARK M's contribution at that point....makes a difference....But we're all good mates really..

No, it's probably road gearing. The advantage for trials of this box is that the outer case is narrower and the gear lever is separate from the kickstart and higher up the box which gives better clearance when squeezing between rocks or tree stumps. You can easily replace 2 gears in the box with the new pair available from our Hosts to get the wide ratios needed for Trials. I notice the primary case has a bulge on the front lower edge. This is the crankshaft breather on these early engines and is not ideal for Trials. You might want to think about blanking this off and installing a crankcase breather somewhere else as on the later engines.

Thanks Mark M for the your feedback. i didnt notice the change of gear lever. even i own Indian RE bullet ,still restoring.

i agreed with your suggestion. it will better to strip down everything re-check and do part replacement as required. put new bearings etc

Thanks everyone for taking time to answer my queries.

Mark M could you give us some more info about the alternative wide ratio gears for the earlier box? I've checked parts for my 51 Bullet but there don't seem to be any options. Cheers Peter
