All,

What are the benefits and negatives of a Amal carb compared to a standard fitted carb. on a 350 bullet ?

Hi Reds, if your 350 is in a standard state of tune, there are no real benefits to be gained, except if you prefer the look of one of the Amals. As much as I am a fan of the Monoblocs on these machines and the MK II's on bigger ported [usually 500] machines, the Micarb is up to the job of feeding standard 350 and 500 machines and gives good, smooth running. Regards, Paul.

I had a concentric carburettor on my motorcycle. After 18 months the slide was rattling in the carburettor body. I went back to the Mikcarb that was on the bike when I bought it rejetted it to meet my 535 performance upgrades and never looked back. I found that the Mikcarb was a better carburettor than the Amal. It just does not look as good.

+1 on the above. I had one on my old '65 because "everyone" did it. No advantage, just poor old fashioned metallurgy that wears out faster. FI is for riders, Micarb is for riders of older machines, Amal is for fashion.

One thing i miss about the old Amal is the choke with the lever on the handlebars..

Operation just seemed intuitive and could be operated on the move..

Mikuni type can be converted to remote lever but the enricher circuit is not as easy to balance requirement pulling away from a junction..

Certainly not with the lever on the right of the carb which entails either letting go the throttle or reaching across and down with the left hand..

I must have been lucky because all the bikes i had from the 50s-60s never suffered with a worn out carb, or maybe i just moved to a newer bike..

Memory fades...

You can buy Concentrics that are not made of mazak. I think they're called Premier. Wassel do one too. The thing about aCincentric is that they're easy to set up. The twin ones on a BSA Lightning I owned years ago were still serviceable when I sold it with 20+ thousand miles on the clock. Easy to balance too, though not relevant here. Back in the day we all ran bellmouths and had knackered old bikes. Hardly a fair assessment. I believe that, not the greatest carbs, they aren't as bad as some say.

The main benefit of the Micarb is you probably already have it and are therefore topside of £180 up if you decide not to waste that on an Amal.
